José Alejandro Bermúdez

José Alejandro was the inaugural Deputy Superintendent for the Protection of Personal Data in Colombia where he charted a path for Latin American data protection as the promoter of the Colombian Accountability Guidelines published by the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC).
As a member of the Governmental commission appointed to draft the Colombian Data Protection Law and its secondary regulations, José Alejandro helped shape the data protection regulatory landscape in Latin America. He was a member of the Colombian OECD Accession Mission (privacy and digital economy) and served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Ibero-American Network of Data Protection (RIPD). Currently LatAm advisor to CIPL and Chair of the Colombian Chapter of the Latin American Privacy Association (ALAP).
José Alejandro is a lawyer from Universidad de los Andes in Colombia specialized in Competition Law and Intellectual Property from ESADE in Barcelona. Through Bermúdez & Esguerra Abogados, a Competition, Privacy and Consumer Protection boutique law firm, he and his team advice and represent Colombian and multinational companies in the implementation of comprehensive privacy programs, defense in administrative enforcement procedures, notification and management of data breaches, drafting of international data transfer contracts and privacy due diligence in M&A transactions, among others.
