CPO, Director, Privacy and Access

Christopher Gillespie has over a decade of experience in privacy across both the public and private sectors. He currently serves as the CPO and Director of Privacy and Access at the University of Victoria. In this role he leads the team reviewing privacy assessments, conducting information incident investigations, responding to access to information requests, and conducting training. He has formerly served as the Senior Program Manager of Smart Infrastructure with the TELUS' Data & Trust Office, an Investigator and Senior Policy Advisor with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia, as well as a Privacy Advisor for both the BC Centre for Disease Control and the Ministry of Citizens' Services.

Notable projects that he has provided privacy advice on include TELUS' self-sovereign identity trial with WestJet, the Panorama Health system at the BC Centre for Disease Control, the BC Services Card, and the joint Integrated Case Management system between the Ministries of Social Development and Children and Family Development. Christopher also served as the co-lead investigator on Canada's only regulatory investigation into the privacy practices of political parties. He is also a long-time IAPP volunteer, having been the Victoria KnowledgeNet Chair and a member of the CIPP/C and CIPM Exam Development Boards.

Christopher holds a Master of Laws in Privacy and Cybersecurity from Osgoode Hall Law School, a Master of Public Administration degree from the Royal Military College of Canada, and a BA in Political Science from the University of Victoria.
