About the IAPP

Dr. John Selby is a Senior Consultant and Head of Research at Privcore, a leading privacy risk management consulting company based in Australia and operating globally, where he advises global businesses, government agencies, and startups on a range of privacy, artificial intelligence and cyber security risk governance issues. He is a member of the Macquarie University Cybersecurity hub and Honorary Research Fellow at Macquarie University, where he previously researched and taught on the spillover effects of the Internet on business, including privacy and cybersecurity issues. Dr. Selby previously worked as a commercial Internet lawyer at King & Wood Mallesons, and as in-house counsel at Telstra. In addition to being a Fellow of the International Association of Privacy Professionals, he is one of the few legally-qualified CISSP and CISMs in Australia.

He is a recipient of an iappANZ Legacy grant for privacy and led the SIMProtect Project which was a finalist for the 2021 AISA Cyber Security Community Outreach Project Award. In 2006, Dr. Selby was recognised by the Lowy Institute as one of Australia’s “New Voices in Technology & International Relations. In 2009, he was a Postel Center Fellow at the University of Southern California’s Information Sciences Institute. In 2013, he was appointed as an ISOC-AU Fellow to the United Nations Internet Governance Forum and in 2016, he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Zurich and the University of Oslo.

Dr. Selby has authored more than thirty research articles, white papers and public policy submissions. He has presented at numerous international privacy and cyber security conferences, including: the United Nations Internet Governance Forum, IAPP’s ANZ Summit, AISA's CyberCon, the Asia Privacy Scholars Network, Australia-India Youth Dialogue, Australian Institute of Company Directors, Australian Internet Governance Forum, Australian Society for Computers and Law and the Macquarie Park Innovation District. Dr. Selby is an experienced media communicator, having been interviewed by many media outlets, including: Channel 7 and 9 News, Weekend Sunrise, the Australian Financial Review, the Sydney Morning Herald, The Conversation, The Project, ABC Radio, and Triple J Radio.
