Principal Research Engineer

Dr. Smullen is Principal Privacy Research Engineer at CableLabs, where he advances privacy-enhancing technologies and helps the broadband industry put privacy into practice. Previously, Daniel worked on the Devices Privacy and Alexa teams at Amazon Lab126. He holds a Ph.D. in software engineering from Carnegie Mellon’s CyLab Security and Privacy Institute, where he collaborated with the founders of the world’s first Privacy Engineering program. Dr. Smullen’s publications have informed public policy, advised national security organizations on emerging AI technologies, and helped Fortune 500 firms embed privacy prior to launch. Today, his work drives technical standards shaping the future of privacy globally.
